G1 GROUP LAUNCH NEW “SERVING UP SUCCESS” CHEF PROGRAMME

One of Scotland’s largest hospitality groups have launched a brand new training programme aimed at introducing young people to a career in catering. Set to kick off this November in St Andrews, it is the first of its kind in Scotland and presents a unique opportunity to take part in a well-rounded, intensive course of development for those interested in a career in chef whites.

The “Serving Up Success” programme will run in several major cities and towns, and will launch in full following a highly successful pilot scheme which ran in Glasgow last year in association with City Of Glasgow College. The purpose of the programme is not only to help fill a widening skills gap in the UK, but also to support local communities by providing a step onto the career ladder via the introduction of practical based learning. During the pilot run, 6 keen individuals who had never stepped into a professional kitchen environment were developed to a Commis Chef level- which speaks volumes of the quality of tutelage on offer.

The bespoke learning programme includes three core components which include live kitchen & service environments, artistry and skill specific workshops based at City Of Glasgow’s state of the art facilities, and carefully selected partnered trips which taught them about specialisms including game preparation and ice cream making. The certified qualifications the chefs can achieve include Health and Safety Level 2, Food Safety Level 2, Allergens and First Aid.

Starting in full this November, the St Andrews programme has proven highly successful with all candidate places now filled. In the coming months, G1 Group will be releasing further information on intake dates for Aberdeen, Edinburgh and Glasgow.

Fiona Armour, Head Of HR and Reward for G1 Group says of the programme:
“We are thrilled to be able to offer this unique opportunity to gain real qualifications whilst developing practical skills which will ensure participants become highly employable. We hope this will kick start many careers and look forward to welcoming some of the stars of the future through our doors.

Willie McCurrach OBE, who is Curriculum Head Of Food at Glasgow Of City College, adds:
“The G1 Group is a major employer in Hospitality throughout Scotland, and City of Glasgow College are absolutely delighted to be working in partnership with them. The Chefs School Training Course was created to develop practical skills like patisserie, cookery, fishmongery, cultural diversity and allergy awareness.”
