2012: G1 Group is double winner at National awards

G1 Group PLC scooped two major awards at the National Publican Awards at London's Grosvenor House Hotel last night (27th March 2012).

The company won Best Managed Pub Company (10-150 sites) and Best New Site for the Corinthian Club in Glasgow. G1 Group was the only Scottish finalist and the company won both categories it entered.

The awards recognise the best pub companies for outstanding efforts in their field. More than 1,200 guests from across the industry enjoyed the 21st anniversary of the event, which was hosted by comedian and TV presenter Jimmy Carr. G1 Group were described by organisers as "big winners" and no other company took more awards. Twelve awards in total were made.

Group Operations Director David McDowall was joined by Head of Brands and Standards David Tracey in collecting the award for Best managed Pub Company from the event's host Jimmy Carr. The award for Best New Site was received by Venue Director Michael Bergson and Venue Manager Rodolphe Combes.

In the judges' report, G1's strategic and creative vision were recognised: "Innovation and high retail standards are G1 Group's main strengths, which led to another year of growth in 2011. It has been able to invest heavily in its estate which included the addition of four new units during the year, and maintain its reputation for unique and exciting venues.
G1 acquires interesting buildings and transforms them into high-standard venues, each targeted at specific demographics."

Judges also praised The Corinthian Club: "Despite being very much at the quality end of the market, the atmosphere and the pricing at The Corinthian Club make it genuinely accessible. There is something for everyone, and the venue has the ability to evolve and adapt to a changing market.
"Attention to detail is maintained throughout. It's a cool, modern space that is somehow still in keeping with the building's architectural heritage. Most impressive is the way the venue has created the intimate within the opulent."

A rigorous four stage judging process for both categories included paper judging of entries, HQ site visit by senior members of the Publican's Morning Advertiser editorial team, venue tours, mystery visits and an in-depth interview from a panel including city analysts, journalists, top industry consultants and industry body chiefs.

David McDowall, Group Operations Director, said: "We are delighted to have received these awards. This National recognition of our team's hard work, commitment and creativity is something that we are all extremely proud of. I firmly believe that the quality of people that we have at every level of our organisation, is the primary reason for this success."

Rob Willock, editor of the Publican's Morning Advertiser, said: "This year's awards entries were of a notably high quality - making the judges' decisions particularly difficult. All the judges agreed that if the pub industry as a whole could achieve the high standards and levels of innovation demonstrated by our awards finalists, it would be in much ruder health."
