Success Stories

Stefan King

Managing Director

Stefan King has been at the helm of G1 Group for over 25 years, having started out with the rather unassuming launch of renowned Glasgow nightspot Club X in Royal Exchange Square. Fast-forward quarter of a century later, he heads up one of Scotland’s most successful and diverse hospitality groups. With a particular interest in the regeneration and restoration of listed buildings, Stefan has become a restaurateur, hotelier, property developer and everything else in between.

Asked to provide some background on his story before G1, he simply replied there wasn’t one.

Lesley Welsh

Chief Operating Officer

Lesley has been with G1 Group for over ten years, originally starting with the business as Director of Iona Pub Partnership, the tenancy division of the company. Her previous experience includes the overseeing of national pub group Punch Taverns portfolio, for whom she was based out of London for a period before returning to Scotland. Lesley obtained her Legal diploma from Aberdeen University.

Here at G1 as Chief Operating Officer, she manages both the Managed and Tenanted units as a whole, overseeing the Operations side of the wider business.

Stephen McQuade

Chief Financial Officer

Stephen joined G1 having spent a decade at drinks giant Heineken, where as a Director he was responsible for Acquisitions & Divestments. He is a member of the Institute of Chartered Accounts of Scotland and graduated from the University of Glasgow.

Here at G1, he oversees Finance, IT and Legal, and is responsible for overseeing corporate acquisition and divestment activity.

Paul Bailey

HR Director

Paul came to G1 bringing with him a huge range of experience in HR and People with brands such as Shell UK, Morrisons and The Money Shop. Paul has particular experience in large scale corporate change and mergers- including that of Safeway-Morrisons and Somerfield Co-Op.

Here at G1, he oversees all HR, people development and learning & development.

Graeme Crossley

Marketing Director

Graeme joined G1 in 2017. He has a background with leading consumer branded businesses across 25 international markets. These include The Coca-Cola Company, Amazon, Pizza Hut and Whitbread. He has a particular depth of expertise in developing & launching new brand propositions and multisite formats.

David Syme

Legal Director

David joined the business having come from leading Scottish commercial law firm Burness Paull LLP. He specialised in the purchasing and selling of trading business, property development and leasing. He graduated from the University of Glasgow with LLB (Honours) and is himself now a part time tutor  there.

Here at G1, David is responsible for all property, corporate and litigation legal matters across the group.

Jo Power

Payroll Manager

Jo is one of G1’s longest serving employees, having joined the business in 1999 as a Payroll & HR administrator. In the years previous, she was based in London for over a decade, heading up Finance Administration at The University of London Union.

Having been with G1 for over 17 years, Jo remains one of the most recognisable faces at Central Office.

Lewis Smith

Operations Support Chef

Since joining the business as a Kitchen Porter in 2008, in his almost decade long career at G1, Lewis has worked in almost every G1 venue within the greater Glasgow area. Having worked his way up rapidly to Commis, several years of hard work and training & development led to his appointment as Head Chef as Arta.

Having recently been promoted to Operations Support Chef, he maintains a key role within the business and is responsible for on-site support & training, food spec and company procedure & compliance.

Nicola McPherson

Head Of Marketing

Having been with the company since 2011, Nicola joined the creative team on a part time basis as a copywriter straight from University, having graduated with an honours degree in Media & Communication. In 2014 she was promoted to Group Marketing Manager having held the position on a temporary basis, before being made Head of Department in 2015.

She is responsible for overseeing the graphics output and managing the workflow for the wider team, as well as PR and strategy support. She has helped launch over 20 new opening projects with G1.

Paul Green

Operations Manager

Paul started his hospitality career as a teenager sorting bottles and tidying the cellar in a friend’s pub. Fast forward a decade or two, and Paul has become one of the most dynamic and experienced Operations Managers within the business.

From managing a pub franchise of 400+ units, to previous roles as a Brand Manager for Heineken and a stint at Brewdog, Paul’s specialism is boutique hotels and restaurants.

Kathryn Barkley

Head Of Financial Reporting

Originally from Northern Ireland, Kathryn first worked with G1 when she audited them with PKF, her employer at the time. Having joined the company on a sixth month secondment in 2011, she accepted a permanent position shortly thereafter and has been with the finance team ever since.

Kathryn has a degree in Accountancy and Finance from The University of Glasgow.

Peter Gunn

General Manager, The Social Royal Exchange Square

Having joined the bar team at The Social while he completed his Fine Art degree, Peter developed a passion and flair for the bustling bar scene and quickly realised his calling. Throughout his years with G1, he has worked his way up the management ladder, and now hold the General Manager position at one of Glasgow’s most institutional bars.

Peter is a very skilled bartender and often supports in the development and support of new bars and openings.
